Klicevo

Klicevo is a settlement on the edge of Niksic, in the broad inland basin at the centre of Montenegro, some 600 metres above the sea. It sits where the flat farmland of the Niksic plain gives way to the grey limestone plateau that shapes the whole region.

Residential and agricultural rather than touristic. Houses stand in loose groups along country lanes, with hayfields, kitchen gardens and grazing land between them, and flocks still move through the surrounding pasture in summer.

It belongs to the Niksic municipality, the largest in the country by area, and many residents work or study in the city and come home to a quiet street where the noise stops. Niksic itself is minutes away.

Niksic has the wooded Trebjesa hill above its rooftops, the palace of King Nikola, the cathedral of St Vasilije Ostroski and a brewery making Niksicko pivo since 1896. The reservoirs of Krupac and Slano fill with swimmers on hot afternoons.

About half an hour, which puts the most visited pilgrimage site in Montenegro within easy reach and makes Klicevo a workable base for anyone who wants to be at the monastery early.

Late spring through early autumn is the comfortable season: the plain is green and the evenings cool. Winters here are genuinely cold, with snow and hard frost — Niksic is one of the chilliest inhabited corners of the country.
