Why 10 Days Is the Sweet Spot
Most Montenegro itineraries stop at the coast — and the coast alone is gorgeous. But the country's secret is that its interior is just as spectacular: deeper canyons, higher mountains and emptier roads than the shoreline ever hints at. Ten days is the sweet spot because it's the first length that lets you do both halves justice without forcing a single brutal driving day.
This itinerary is a loop: coast first (so you ease in by the sea), then inland and north into the national parks, then back down to the Adriatic to fly home. It covers the UNESCO Bay of Kotor, the Budva Riviera, the sandy southern beaches, Lake Skadar's wine country, the pilgrimage cliff of Ostrog, the canyon-and-lake landscapes of Durmitor and the Tara, and the primeval forest of Biogradska Gora — with an optional reach into the Prokletije "Accursed Mountains."

Before You Go: The Essentials
Where to fly.Tivat (TIV) is closest to the Bay of Kotor (~15 min to Kotor) and the natural start/end point for this loop. Podgorica (TGD) suits travellers who'd rather start inland or who find better fares there. Dubrovnik (DBV) in Croatia is a common arrival for the northern bay (under 3 hours, with a border crossing). For a clean loop, fly in and out of the same coastal airport — Tivat is ideal.
Rent a car — essential for this trip. A 10-day loop simply isn't practical without one. Driving rules to know: dipped headlights on at all times year-round, seat belts mandatory, and a strict 0.03% drink-drive limit (effectively zero — and near-zero for young or professional drivers). There's no vignette; tolls are paid at staffed plazas. The A-1 (Bar–Boljare) Smokovac–Mateševo section charges about €3.50 per car, and the Sozina tunnel toward Lake Skadar is also tolled (a few euros). Most rentals require drivers to be at least 21 with a licence held 1–2 years; carry your full licence, and bring an International Driving Permit if your licence was issued outside the EU — rental desks vary on whether they insist, and it costs little to have. Register on arrival. Every visitor must be registered within 24 hours (the "white card" / bijeli karton); each licensed accommodation does this automatically and collects a sojourn tax of about €1 per adult per night. Because you'll change accommodation several times on this loop, each new host re-registers you — just confirm they do.
When to go.June and September are the best overall — warm coast, accessible mountains, fewer crowds. July–August is peak on the coast (busiest, near-double prices) but is also when the high mountain trails and lakes are at their most reliable. Day 1: Arrive & Kotor
Drive time: ~15 minutes from Tivat airport to Kotor.
Ease in by the sea. Land at Tivat, collect your hire car, and head to Kotor. Drop your bags and lose an afternoon in the old town — a medieval maze of marble alleys, churches and squares wrapped in cliff-climbing walls.
See the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon (consecrated 1166), the clock tower and the Maritime Museum. If you've energy and the heat has eased, start the climb up the city walls to the San Giovanni fortress (~1,350 steps) for the bay's best panorama — or save it for the morning.
Food stop: a back-lane konoba for grilled fish, crni rižot (squid-ink risotto) or a Njeguši prosciutto board.
Drive time: ~20–30 minutes Kotor to Perast (~12 km), plus a short boat.
A full day on the bay, keeping your Kotor base.
Morning: drive to Perast, a traffic-free Baroque village, and take a small boat to Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa od Škrpjela), the man-made island church — the bay's signature image. Climb St Nicholas's bell tower for the view back.
Afternoon: either a bay boat tour (some reach the Blue Cave near the bay mouth with a swim stop) or a drive to Herceg Novi, the stepped sun-trap town at the entrance to the bay. The Kamenari–Lepetane ferry across the Verige strait saves a long loop.
Food stop: seafood on a Perast waterfront terrace, or sunset in Herceg Novi's old town.
Drive time: ~40 minutes Kotor to Budva (~23 km); ~10–15 minutes to Sveti Stefan.

Afternoon:Sveti Stefan, Montenegro's most photographed sight — a fortified islet of terracotta roofs on a causeway. After five years shuttered by a dispute between its operator and the state, the island's Aman resort reopened on July 1, 2026 — and the settlement restored free public access to Sveti Stefan Beach and King's Beach, with Queen's Beach reserved for hotel guests. The mainland viewpoint still gives the classic shot.
Food stop: from cheap burek at a pekara to upscale seafood around Pržno and Sveti Stefan with islet views.
Drive time: ~50 minutes Budva to Bar (~40 km); ~30 minutes Bar to Ulcinj.
Head south into the part of the coast most visitors skip — and where Montenegro's beaches turn to real sand.
Morning: Bar. Visit Stari Bar (Old Bar), a romantic ruined hill-town a few kilometres inland from the modern port — Ottoman and Venetian remains tumbling across a rocky plateau, with mountain views. Bar is also home to a famous 2,000-year-old olive tree, among the oldest in Europe.

Afternoon: Ulcinj. Continue to Ulcinj, the southernmost coastal town, with a strong Albanian-Montenegrin character, a clifftop old town and — just south — Velika Plaža (Long Beach), a 12 km ribbon of actual sand that's the best on the Montenegrin coast and a magnet for kitesurfers. This is the south's headline.
Food stop: seafood in Ulcinj's old town, or grilled fish near the beach.
Where to stay (Night 4): stay south to enjoy the beaches and avoid backtracking — browse rentals in Ulcinj or Bar. The far south is also the best-value stretch of coast.
Day 5: Lake Skadar & the Wine Country
Drive time: ~1–1.5 hours Ulcinj/Bar to Virpazar.
Turn inland to the largest lake in Southern Europe. Lake Skadar — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve as of 2026 — is a glassy world of water lilies, island monasteries and birdlife, including the rare Dalmatian pelican.
Morning: a boat trip from Virpazar across the lake, past floating lily fields and ruined island fortresses.
Lunch: lakeside konoba for freshwater fish — carp, eel or riblja čorba (fish soup).
Afternoon: drive the wine roads — this is the heart of Montenegrin wine country, where family wineries pour the indigenous reds Vranac and Kratošija. Don't miss the Rijeka Crnojevića viewpoint, where the river curls in a perfect S-bend through the hills — one of the country's iconic photo stops.
Food stop: a winery lunch or dinner pairing local reds with smoked fish and cheese.

Day 6: Podgorica & Ostrog Monastery
Drive time: ~30 minutes Virpazar to Podgorica; ~1 hour Podgorica to Ostrog.
A transition day from lake to mountains, via the capital and a pilgrimage cliff.
Morning: Podgorica. Montenegro's capital and largest city is workaday rather than pretty, but worth a couple of hours: the striking Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, the Ottoman-era Stara Varoš quarter and the Millennium Bridge over the Morača. It's a useful place to restock and refuel before the interior.
Afternoon: Ostrog Monastery. Drive north to Ostrog, the Orthodox monastery improbably carved into a sheer cliff face. The white Upper Monastery glowing against the rock is one of the Balkans' most striking sights, drawing pilgrims of several faiths. Dress modestly (covered shoulders and knees).
Food stop: a roadside highland konoba for lamb cooked ispod sača (under an iron bell), kajmak and mountain cheese.
Where to stay (Night 6): push on toward the mountains and overnight near Kolašin to shorten tomorrow's drive — browse rentals in Kolašin — or stay closer to Podgorica if you prefer. Kolašin is a cool-air mountain resort town and a good staging post.
Day 7: Into the Mountains — Durmitor & the Tara Canyon
Drive time: ~2–2.5 hours Kolašin to Žabljak via the Tara Canyon road.
Today you reach Montenegro's wild heart. The drive north toward Žabljak, the gateway town to Durmitor National Park, is one of the country's great roads — climbing through forest and over high passes.
En route: the Tara River Canyon. The Tara is among the deepest river canyons in the world, and the Đurđevića Tara Bridge is the classic stop — a five-arch concrete span completed in 1940, 365 meters long with its deck 172 meters above the river, and at its completion the largest vehicular concrete arch bridge in Europe. In 1942, Partisans dynamited one of its arches to stall an Italian offensive; Lazar Jauković, an engineer from the bridge's construction who planned the demolition, was captured and executed on the span, and the bridge was rebuilt in 1946. This is also zip-line and white-water-rafting country: the Tara's rapids are a bucket-list raft, usually run as a half-day from put-ins near the bridge (best late spring to summer).

Afternoon: arrive Žabljak. At around 1,450 m, Žabljak is the highest town in the Balkans and your base for the next nights. Settle in and breathe the alpine air.
Food stop: hearty mountain fare in Žabljak — lamb, cicvara (a cornmeal-and-cheese dish), wild-mushroom soups.
A full day in Durmitor, a UNESCO World Heritage site of glacial lakes, soaring peaks and high meadows.
Morning: the Black Lake. Start at Crno Jezero (the Black Lake), Durmitor's emblem — a short walk from Žabljak, ringed by pine forest beneath the Meded peak. The easy loop around it (about 3.5 km) is the park's signature stroll; in summer you can swim.
Afternoon: choose your adventure. Options scale to your fitness:
The Durmitor Ring road — a scenic drive looping past high lakes and viewpoints, doable in an afternoon.
Hiking — countless trails, from gentle lake walks to serious summit days (Bobotov Kuk, the high point, is a long, demanding hike for experienced walkers).

Food stop: back in Žabljak, a slow mountain dinner and a glass of local rakija.

Day 9: Biogradska Gora & Kolašin
Drive time: ~1.5–2 hours Žabljak to Biogradska Gora / Kolašin.
Begin curving back toward the coast, with one more national park on the way.
Midday: Biogradska Gora. One of Europe's last old-growth (virgin) forests, centred on the serene glacial Lake Biograd. An easy lakeside loop walk through towering ancient trees is the perfect counterpoint to Durmitor's bare peaks — green, hushed and primeval.
The forest's survival is no accident. When Ottoman rule ended here in 1878, the clans of the Morača and Rovca valleys presented the woodland to Prince Nikola, who set it aside as a royal reserve — six years after Yellowstone, making it one of the world's earliest protected landscapes. The strictly protected core covers about 1,600 hectares of beech, fir and maple with trees up to 500 years old, one of the last three virgin forests of this scale left in Europe.
Afternoon: Kolašin. Settle in the mountain town of Kolašin, a low-key resort with a small old core, good restaurants and crisp air. In winter it's a ski town; in summer it's a hiking and relaxation base.
Food stop: Kolašin does mountain cuisine well — try the lamb and local cheeses, or a trout dinner.
Where to stay (Night 9):Kolašin — browse rentals in Kolašin — a comfortable, scenic stop before the final coastal run.
Day 10: Back to the Coast & Departure
Drive time: ~2.5–3 hours Kolašin to the coast / Tivat airport (allow buffers); ~1h20 Podgorica to Kotor if departing from TGD.
Your last day closes the loop. The drive from the mountains back to the Adriatic is long but beautiful — much of it through the Morača Canyon, with the photogenic Morača Monastery worth a brief stop.
If your flight allows: a final hour on the coast — a last swim, a coffee on the Kotor or Budva walls, edible souvenirs (olive oil, honey, rakija, a bottle of Vranac).
Then to the airport. Aim for Tivat (TIV) to keep the final drive shortest; Podgorica (TGD) is also an option and closer to the mountains. Build a generous buffer for the canyon roads and rental drop-off.
Where to stay (if you need a final night): travellers with early flights often spend the last night in Tivat for proximity to TIV — find apartments in Tivat.
Stretch to 14 Days
Have two weeks? Use the extra four days to slow the loop down and reach the corners even most road-trippers miss. The easiest way is to insert these without rebuilding the route:
+1 day on the southern coast (after Day 4). Give Ulcinj's Velika Plaža a full beach day, explore Stari Bar properly, and detour to the Ada Bojana river island near the Albanian border — a windswept, kitesurfing-and-seafood spot. Rentals in Ulcinj.
+1 day at Lake Skadar (after Day 5). A second day for more wineries, a kayak on the lake, and the monasteries and fortresses dotted around its shores. Base in Podgorica or on the coast at Bar.
+1–2 days for Prokletije (after Durmitor). The Prokletije — the "Accursed Mountains" — are Montenegro's most dramatic and least-visited alpine range, on the borders with Albania and Kosovo. Base in Plav or Gusinje, hike to glacial lakes and the Grebaje and Ropojana valleys, and feel like you've left the tourist map entirely. Long-distance hikers cross this country on the Via Dinarica White Trail, a roughly 2,000 km route along the spine of the Dinaric Alps that threads through both Durmitor and the Prokletije. This adds real driving and is best for keen hikers; in shoulder season check road and trail conditions.
+1 day for Cetinje & Lovćen (anywhere mid-trip). The old royal capital Cetinje — museums, the former court, and the road up to Lovćen National Park and the Njegoš Mausoleum, where 461 steps lead to one of Montenegro's greatest panoramas, the whole country spread below. This slots neatly between the bay and Lake Skadar.
A 14-day version typically looks like: coast (4) → south + Ada Bojana (2) → Lake Skadar (2) → Cetinje/Lovćen + Ostrog (2) → Durmitor/Tara (2) → Prokletije or Biogradska Gora (2) → coast/departure. It's a fuller, calmer trip with proper rest days built in.
Practical Tips for the Loop
Drive the loop one direction. Coast-first, then inland and north, then back — it eases you in by the sea and saves the long mountain drives for when you're acclimatised. Don't ping-pong between coast and mountains.
Don't underestimate inland drive times. Mountain roads are slow, winding and occasionally single-lane with tunnels. The verified figure of 3+ hours from the coast to Žabljak is real — plan accordingly and avoid night driving in the mountains.
Fuel and cash. Fill the tank before long interior legs; petrol stations thin out. Carry cash for tolls (the A-1 ~€3.50/car, the Sozina tunnel, both staffed), rural konobas, markets and small towns. Cards work in towns and hotels.
Pack for two climates. The coast is hot Mediterranean; Durmitor and Prokletije are sub-alpine and can be cold even in summer. Layers, a waterproof and proper shoes for the mountain days.
Each host registers you. With several accommodation changes, the white-card registration and ~€1/night sojourn tax are handled by each new host — just confirm.
Build in a rest day. Ten days of driving and sightseeing is a lot; if you can, take a slow beach or lake day mid-trip. The 14-day version bakes this in.

It's the first itinerary length that lets you reach the northern national parks (Durmitor, the Tara Canyon, Biogradska Gora) properly, not just the Adriatic.
